We walk along the grizzled path
The wind betrays, the coldness set
An icy thrill sets the heart beat racing.
You slip your arm into the curve of mine:
Once more we struggle on this weathered way.
Not so young, not so fresh
But still entwined
As though the wind and storm
Had always cleft us together
To anchor all this effort and comfort
The warm brood of companionship:
Bodies age and suppleness expires
But the generative force of friendship never dulls.
Now, care and concern
The brusque chatter of old lovers
Measures time and temperature:
Ragged and at ease
We walk towards the dim blue sky.
